Tuesday, July 29, 2008
1:27 PM CDT
The English Cave Community Garden in Benton Park won an award in
an annual competition held by the St. Louis non-profit
organization Gateway Greening.
The garden, located at 1960 Provenchere Place in the south St.
Louis neighborhood of Benton Park, won second place in the "new
garden" category of Gateway Greening's 2008 Urban Garden
Competition.
It's the first award for the garden, which is in the midst of
its second season of operation. The award was announced July 1
and the English Cave gardeners were presented with a
certificate, outdoor decorative frog, gardening books and a
woven basket.
The English Cave Community Garden is on a 14,000-square-foot lot
that's owned by the city of St. Louis.
In 2006, the Benton Park Neighborhood Association petitioned the
city to lease the land for public use and was awarded a
five-year lease.
The garden contains decorative plants and plots for neighborhood
residents to grow fruits and vegetables.
A
NEW Water Schedule:
Dear
Garden Friends:
Saturday last was such a cold rainy day, seven of us determined the
next steps for the garden as we looked over it with our soup and
sandwiches. We seven decided to take care of the watering schedule
this week, now that the sun is out again and helping the lovely
garden to grow.
We
each decided on a day this week and Lisa kindly set up a calendar
kit on the picnic table for all garden plot owners to visit in the
next few days to mark a day on the month when you can water the
garden.
There
are 26 of us so it will probably mean one visit per month for your
watering stint, we will be weeding the community plot for ten
minutes on our regular monthly meeting as well as on our own plots
in between as necessary. So it will be extremely minimum effort to
keep everything going but at the same time very important and
necessary for the success of the whole garden, so please write in
your day each month on Lisa's calendar and etch it in your brain.
Hermann's hose with a trigger attachment is in the middle of the
lot, just press the lever and the water is on and ready. It takes
about 20 mins to water the individual plots and the wild flower berm
on Provenchere and by the side of Hermann's house..
There
is a system for anyone who wishes to opt out of their plot being
watered: Instructions are in the schedule kit. We will take care of
the trees as necessary and when the herbs are planted on the
Illinois Alley side, they will need to be included also. Please
bring any questions to the next regular monthly meeting at the
garden 7 pm on Thursday April 26.
- Thanks, Marian, Bill, Bob, Sandy, Lisa, Daven and Nancy
A
Little History:
In May of 2006, the
BPNA became aware of a large lot of land, smacked dab in the middle
of Benton Park, had come into possession by the City of St Louis.
The BPNA immediately petitioned the City of St Louis to lease the
land to BPNA for public use. On July 21, 2006 The BPNA was
awarded a 5 year lease.

(orignal - July 2006)
(Spring of 2007)
The BPNA then formed a
new Community Garden Committee. They were charged with
planting and
maintain plantings in parks and public land.
