Notes

Dear Friends and Fans
of English Cave Community Garden:
I have prepared these
minutes for your review and enjoyment. Please note we had one
person’s name correction from the previous minutes and that is this:
Change to: Glenn
McGowan.
Thanks Glenn!
We held this meeting
on October 27th for the first time at Marian’s storefront room.
Buoyed by a large pot of hot coffee, various cookies from the host
and some Indian Summer Raspberry beer brought by Daven we tore into
the agenda. We had two key topics that consumed most of out
thoughts.
Key Topic No. 1
This was the exciting
notice by Lisa and Daven about the fact that Baur Nursery via the
St. Louis City Capital Improvements Fund had awarded us all our
plant and tree requests. Most of these are starter plants and trees
and here are some of the species we’ll be getting soon: Hickory,
pecan, apple, pear, raspberry.
So, we are setting
several planting dates once we know the pickup dates for the plants.
Our first tentative date is Sunday November 5th but it does not look
like much will happen as the plants are not in yet.
Key Topic No. 2
Our next major topic
that night was the Gateway Greening grant. The deadline is November
10th and after much back and forth Bill and Daven filled it out and
I will end off very soon. It will help focus the effort and may have
positive implications with water and electricity plus more plants.
Other discussions as
listings…
 |
Chris and Nancy
are interested in findings folks from this effort that can help
with the other park beautification efforts. We should use our
meetings as a way for them to solicit help to this similar
effort in Benton Park. Also, Chris is looking for a Committee
chairperson to lead up the overall effort. |
 |
Daven said that
more cardboard is needed for the paths which Chris has helped
bring. |
 |
Sandy will see if
the “Step Up St. Louis” group can help with a grant. She brought
a friend, Bob Dielman, who has a nice garden and helped with
some great thoughts. |
 |
Marian will modify
the garden design to reflect changes we talked about.
|
 |
Glenn will talk to
a Eagle Scout group about making wooden signs. |
 |
There was talk
about using Craigslist for things we need. |
 |
We should clarify
more the fire hydrant use. |
 |
We can participate
in the Great Perennial Divide if we want spring bulbs.
|
 |
We may need bamboo
for different uses. |
 |
It was mentioned
that Climbing Hyacinth is a nice plant. |
 |
There was
discussion for a small Zen Garden with maze and a place for
sculptures. |
eeting attendees were:
Chris Rowley, Nancy Galvin, Glenn McGowan, Daven Schanche, Lisa
Watson, Bob and Sandy LaRouche, Bob Dielman, Bill Kranz and Marian
Amies.
Thanks,
Bill Kranz – Note Taker
Note – Any corrections
or omissions please send to me and I can note them at the start of
the next minutes or re-issue the minutes.
Follow-Up

Updated news since
then…
Saturday October 28th
Benton Park neighbor Chandler Loos came by the garden with Garrett
Jenson of Frontenac Forestry Co. to cut out the high limb in the
Mulberry Tree Grove. This limb had been damaged during the bad
windstorm this summer. Well they did a fantastic job with this hard
task and deserve a round of applause. I will further mention this
effort at the BPNA meeting as part of our update. (We must still cut
up the limbs; they have sawed the bigger up already…)
Lisa Watson asked that
her contact e-mail be changed
