1. The group welcomed Clinton Berry,
a new neighbor and a new community gardener. Chris Rowley planned to
read a chapter from a Russian text about the social impact community
gardening has in a political environment. Chris had to leave before
the end of the meeting; will ask Chris to bring the text to read it
at our next meeting.
2. Budget and fundraising review;
seasonal social event calendar review.
Guy Team event (Daven, Bill, Chris, Bob), Pig Roast. The date has
been moved to Sunday September 14 afternoon, Bill will be the
liaison with John McKinstry to get advice on what types of roast
John can accommodate on his electric spit roaster. Lisa is also
making an effort to get music for the event and enquiring about the
roast. Lisa will also provide bread and dips, Marian will provide
potato salad serving 30 persons, Sandra will provide baked beans and
apple sauce. Clinton will bake cookies and Nancy will make corn
pudding. We will ask for donations at the event. The committee
suggested
having the food in foam to go boxes.
Gourd Glow event (Marian), remains scheduled for Sunday
October 26, 3 to 8 pm.
Marian reported on the printed Compton and Dry Neighborhood maps
that were produced in the early nineties; she worked with Libby
Reuter and Marion Smith on these as a fundraiser for the
neighborhood, John Doggett suggested that these could be part of the
Garden fundraising activities. Marian will provide digital files of
the map and give information to Nancy by the deadline for the next
newsletter. A copy of the map framed will be exhibited at the
September neighborhood meeting and be discussed at that time.
Proposed Trivia Night event.
Nancy suggested that a neighborhood 50/50 trivia night event be
scheduled for either late January or February, perhaps at the Benton
Park Cafe. A small committee was formed with Nancy, Lisa, Marian and
Sandy to research and develop the event.
3a. Personal plot updates.
Clinton has been assigned a plot and will start planting it this
season. Ron Turnbough and Carol Brandon will move to Tamara Gegg
LaPlume’s old plot. Deanna is doing the mowing on a regular basis.
Lisa is also mowing and will plan around Deanna’s proposed schedule.
3b. Community garden area.
The Shed. Daven got the LRA approval. Bob has sent a memo and is
waiting to hear from Erica. The shed will be $470.47. Bob suggested
the shed could be put in about 3 hours on the next workday. Lisa
will make up a task list for the workday, 9 am on Sunday August 24.
Sandy suggested purchasing and creating stakes with peoples’ names
on them to identify plots also stakes could identify the community
garden areas. We also need poles, twine and 2 x 2’s for tying up the
tomatoes in the community areas, Clinton has 5 or 6 tomato cages.
4. Gateway Greening.
The volunteer event scheduled by Gateway Greening to work in our
garden was cancelled due to inclement weather. The group
decided to spend the September meeting writing the grant for the
next Gateway Greening deadline due in November 2008,
