Pangea wins portion of $800 million cleanup contract
One of 22 firms across the country picked for the job
St. Louis
Business Journal - October 29, 2004by Rick Desloge
Pangea Group, an environmental cleanup business here, has been
prequalified to handle part of an $800 million contract for the U.S.
Department of Energy.
Pangea was one of 22 firms from across the country approved for the
work. The contract involves cleaning up former nuclear weapon sites
with radioactive contamination and other government locations
contaminated with hazardous materials such as asbestos, said Donnie
Campbell, the contracting officer in charge of the award at the
Department of Energy's operations in Aiken, S.C. The work will be
undertaken during the next five years, Campbell said.
Pangea, which is owned by company President Mike Zambrana, was among
the smallest companies in the competition to win part of the
contract. More than 102 firms bid to be eligible for the
assignments, Campbell said. Zambrana said he expects to see
significant growth this year and in 2005 as a result of the
government deal.
Other winning bidders include large companies such as Bechtel
National of McLean, Va., and Washington Group International of
Denver.
Pangea had $31 million in revenue last year, Zambrana said. The
company has about 85 full-time employees and another 85 trade union
workers. Pangea will be hiring project engineers in the coming weeks
to meet the demands of the government work, he said. Pangea's share
of the work is yet to be determined.
Pangea and other prequalified firms will still have to bid on the
exact assignments as the government puts them out for bid, Campbell
said, but all the prequalified firms are expected to land parts of
the business.
The Department of Energy split contract work among environmental
cleanup, waste management services, and demolition and removal of
old facilities. Pangea was approved only for environmental cleanup,
the area comprising the most government work, Campbell said.
Environmental cleanup is Pangea's specialty. The 6-year-old company
got its start in St. Louis cleaning nuclear waste at the former
Weldon Spring nuclear testing facility in St. Charles County.
In July, Pangea graduated from a St. Louis County business incubator
and moved its staff into St. Louis city offices on Jefferson Avenue.
In addition to St. Louis, the company has offices in Overland Park,
Kansas; Cincinnati; Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Denver.
